Croatia officially became today the 28th European Union country beginning with fireworks, cannon-fire and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Besides celebrations, citizens were fed into doubts as well.
Following Slovenia (2004), Croatia stepped up as the second European member from the former Yugoslav block, but many Croats are skeptic about this accession to the EU. Will it bring benefits or troubles for the Balkan country? Croatia in its fifth year of recession is entering in a critical period of financial and economic crisis within the EU member states.
“This will change the life of this nation for good. I welcome you wholeheartedly,” Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, told the crowd in Zagreb. (Reuter)
A nice recap to watch about the EU since its creation.
