Zimmerman’s acquittal sparks protests in the US

Protests broke out in several US cities after Sunday non-guilty verdict of George Zimmerman. Thousands of people are marching askin for justice for the murder of the teenager Trayvon Martin. George Zimmerman was acquitted by the justice depatment, the prosecution can file for appeal but only on the procedural aspect, not on the facts of the case.

In light of the events President Obam calls for calm and invites people to avoid violence: “We are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son” (Al Jazeera). While the majority of protesters marched peacefully, tension and violence particularly grew in Los Angeles.

The nation was diveded thoug and supporters including Zimmerman’s relatives still deny allegations of racism and argue that civil rights groups are being incendiary without facts to back up their claims. Racial tone also came up when demonstrators claim that justice is only for white Americans.

The verdict remains controversial.
