Today, Wednesday 27 November 2013, at 17:43 the Senate voted for Silvio Belrusconi’s decadence after the former Prime Minister was convicted of tax fraud. 192 in favor, 113 against and 2 abstentions.
Berlusconi was sentenced on AUGUST 1, 2013 to four years in jail — commuted to a year of community service — and was banned from holding public office for two years due to a vast tax fraud conspiracy at his Mediaset television empire.
Around 500 TV, newspaper and radio journalists, both national and international, were present for this landmark event that will surely have unpredictable consequences on the Italian political landscape. The Letta’s Government, however, had recently survived a confidence vote on the 2014 budget on Tuesday with the help of a group of center-right senators who broke away from ‘Forza Italia’.
After almost two decades ruling the country – three mandates from 1994 to 2011 – he called today on his followers to gather in Rome to support him during his rally that will put an end to his career as politician and orator.
